Monthly Inspiration: December 2015

Shine Your Light

By Jessica Bellofatto

"December is a holy month. Maybe it is the dark, silky silence that descends so early that speaks to me of reverence. Maybe it is the promise that December holds—that no matter how dark, how cold, how empty it can get, the light is coming back. Something always shifts in me when December arrives—I embrace the darkness, and am eager for the coming solstice when the whole world is still and holds its breath, waiting to be reborn again." Lindsey Mead, from her blog A Design So Vast

This December, I invite you to embrace the darkness... these next three weeks leading up to the winter solstice are a perfect opportunity to go deeply inside yourself and reflect on what matters most in your life. I have been doing this myself—a LOT—as I continue to grapple with the future of KamaDeva Yoga and what direction my heart is leading me in. I have not come to a decision as of yet and there are so many things factoring in to this big decision, as I have owned a yoga studio for the past 17 years!! Ultimately I am trying, at the age of 42, to come to a place in which I feel less pulled and more present. What this looks like I am not sure, but I do know that spending more time on the mat myself, more time with my children and my partner, and more time absorbed in the things that I truly love doing is key.

Hopefully, each one of us is living our lives by following our hearts. As the world seems to be quite dark at the moment, and all around us there are people facing their darkest times, we have no choice but to spread as much light as possible to as many people as possible. It is truly the only way through this darkness. As in my yoga classes I am constantly reminding my students to find the place in the middle, to balance the tendencies in the body by 'doing the opposite'—so too in our daily lives should we be counteracting the trend of fear, hatred, negativity and the mentality of 'us against them' or 'me against you' by spreading as much love and light as we possibly can.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said:

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar,
but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
Through violence you may murder the hater,
but you do not murder hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate.
So it goes.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

So, roll out your yoga mat—move, breathe, cry, laugh and pray for the return of the Light—the Light within each of us, that does exist if we allow ourselves to connect and believe. The Tantrikas believe that the Universe is SRI—it is light, it is beauty, it is joy; it is at its essence perfect and whole and complete and good. The darkness that exists is a mis-alignment and nothing more. Align with the SRI and align with the Light. Stand firm in that, and it will ultimately prevail.

Many Many Blessings, Love, Happiness, and LIGHT,
