'Sri Patabhi Jois'

By Jessica Bellofatto, June 2009

As the inspiration this month, I wanted to offer to you all these words from one of our beloved teachers, Sri Krishna Patabhi Jois, who most of you know left his body on May 18 in Mysore, India.

(From the Yoga Mala, pp 17), by Sri K. Patabhi Jois:

"We now have to ask whether it is possible to realize the true nature of yoga simply by understanding its meaning as a word. By the mere study of the texts on yoga, by the mere grasp of yoga’s meaning as a word, one cannot have a thorough knowledge of yoga. For, just as a good knowledge of culinary science does not satisfy hunger, neither will the benefits of yoga be realized fully by a mere understanding of the science of its practice. Thus, the scriptures can only show us the right path. It is left to us to understand them and to put them into practice. By the strength gained through this practice, we can come to know the method for bringing the mind and sense organs under control. Thus we can achieve yoga. For it is only through control of the mind and the sense organs that we come to know our true nature, and not through intellectual knowledge, or by putting on the garb of a yogi."

To put it simply and in Guriji’s own words: “Practice, and ALL is coming.”

Our deepest gratitude to a truly amazing yogi and teacher. His influence is far-reaching. We bow low at his holy feet.

Om Shantih Shantih Shantih

Vande Gurunam charanaravinde
Sandarshita svatmasukhavabodhe
Nishreyase jangalikayamane
Samsara halahala mohashantyai

I worship the Guru’s lotus feet
Awakening the happiness of the Self revealed
Beyond comparison, acting like the jungle physician
To pacify delusion from the poison of existence.
