Fall Special for New Students: $90 for 90 Days of Unlimited Yoga
For All Other Devoted Yogis: $108 for Unlimited Monthly Yoga!
'Savasana' By Jennifer Frasher
A teacher of mine once told me, " Life is not a problem to be solved nor is it a question to be answered."
We all experience moments in our lives where there is chaos, stress, unhappiness, and feelings of dis-ease. It is in these moments where we panic and desperately try to "fix" something. We act as if life is throwing us a "curve ball" and we need to figure out how to "hit back" what life has "thrown" at us.
We resist, we manipulate, we lie, we make up excuses, we blame, we struggle, we fight, we do everything in our control to make it "right", and in the end, we forget the one thing that could help us most.
Surrender. Surrender to the idea that you might be wrong. Surrender to someone else's help or guidance. Surrender (if you will) to life.
Now, just to clarify, surrender does not mean to give up, to throw your hands up in frustration because you've tried everything else. Nor does it mean to sit back, relax and let someone else do all the work for you. Surrender means to listen. Surrender means to accept. Surrender means to appreciate. Surrender means to let go into the flow of life. Surrender means to feel the energy all around you. Surrender means to consciously, with integrity, participate in the wonder of life with a deep understanding that you are just a small part of the "whole".
Savasana is the practice of surrender. It is where we completely drop the body, release the breath, and quiet the mind. It is here that we can feel the flow of life, in us and all around us. And whether we know it or not, it's where we gain a deeper understanding of who we are and who we are capable of being.
Unfortunately, surrendering in our daily lives is not as easy as surrendering in Savasana, but that is why we practice. And so I encourage you, the next time you find yourself in a certain situation that you want to control, or perhaps feel stressed about someone or something, let your body release, just like you do in Savasana. Release any tension, any constriction, any resistance, and then release your breath, listen to it, observe it, feel it! And then let your mind quiet, and feel what is really happening around you. Notice who or what is before you. Surrender yourself to the situation. Surrender to life.
