"The Next Right Thing"
I was recently given the opportunity to participate in a sweat lodge right here in East Hampton. I had been invited to the lodge every full moon through out the summer months, but had always been too tired at the end of long days of teaching to really commit to being present for something like that. So finally, post Labor Day, on a gorgeous bright full moon night, my boyfriend and I arrived at 5:30pm to make our prayer ties, dress the lodge, sit around the fire, which was sparkling and glowing with the 'ancestors' (the hot rocks which will be delivered into the lodge, seven for each 'door' of the lodge), and set our intentions.
Every time I am asked to set an intention, so much comes up for me. I have so many intentions, so many hopes and dreams, for my family, my relationship, my career, my community, and then of course the larger perspective of desiring peace and happiness for all beings in this world. At the lodge that night though, as it got hotter and hotter, as I put my face to the ground several times through out the course of the night to try to breathe in the cool earth, as I thought several times of asking for the door to be opened, but did not, what came up for me was the very real need for me to get more and more CLEAR. To be more specific in my intention, in my desires. To know HOW to ask, to know HOW to pray, to know HOW to dream...
I can not predict the future, but what I can do, and what YOU can do, is to CREATE your present as you would like to see your future. It starts here and NOW. So, when one of the elder men in the lodge, with obviously a very deep practice, stated that he just keeps asking for guidance to do "the next right thing," that resonated with me in a very real way.
Why did I need the lodge to gain this perspective? It is, I think, the same reason we need our yoga practice. We need to get out of our own way, we need to humble ourselves, we need to purify (yes, through a bit of suffering :) ) to gain deeper insight and wisdom. We need to gather (satsang) with like minded individuals, take a step, or a leap perhaps into the unknown, and with faith, trust, dedication, desire, and LOVE for self and others, ask to be guided, again and again and again, to the next right thing, the next right thing, the next right thing.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
~ Mary Oliver, from The Summer Day

A Workshop with Jessica Bellofatto at Be True Yoga in Scarsdale, NY
Jessica is back at Be True to share one of her signature master classes: rooting the thighbones back into the hamstrings. This action, one of the most elemental alignment points in asana, creates an ease of breath, a freedom in the lower back, and a movement deep into the core of the body. In this two-hour workshop we will explore rooting the thighbones back in various asanas from standing poses, to backbends, to seated forward bends, and look at how the emotion of fear often disallows this movement in the physical body. When we cultivate compassion, and move from the fear that accompanies the illusion of separateness, to the freedom and lightness that accompanies the opening of the heart, the action of the thighbones rooting back will occur spontaneously. Jessica Bellofatto, founder and director of KamaDeva Yoga in East Hampton, is best known for her easy laughter, radiant energy and scrupulous knowledge of the body. In her classes and sold-out yoga retreats worldwide, Jessica inspires students to use movement as play, movement as therapy and asana practice specifically, as a spiritual practice to benefit all beings. Steeped in the Jivamukti tradition, Jessica also studies extensively with leading teachers from John Friend and Richard Freeman to senior teachers at the Iyengar Institute. She is also an avid student of Sanskrit and Tibetan Buddhism.
Details: Sunday, October 23, 9-11am at Be True Yoga in Scarsdale, NY.Cost for workshop is $40 pre-registered, $50 on day of event. Registration: please sign up online on the Be True Yoga website.
